Harvest Gleaners

A 501(C)(3) Non-Profit Organization

Harvest Gleaners' roots trace back to the late 1920s when Carol's grandmother began gleaning and serving low-income families in Washington, DC, and Virginia.

In 2005 we noticed there was a need in our local area and began to hand out sandwiches and blankets to the homeless in Baltimore. From there we went on to purchase and bring donated food to local organizations that were seeking to do their part. Since the inception of Harvest Gleaners in 2019, we’ve been busy expanding.

Generations later, Harvest Gleaners has continued this legacy by providing essential resources, such as healthy food, to underserved communities. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, everything is offered free of charge, ensuring that those in need do not have to choose between basic necessities.

Our Mission

Founded in 2019 by Carol McCarty and Mark Scuderi, Harvest Gleaners was established to fight food insecurity and provide compassion and support to underserved communities in the DMV area. We focus on distributing surplus food and short-shelf-life items, which would otherwise go to waste, directly to those in need through our volunteer distribution site organization. We also provide pantry items to senior living communities. Our self-funded volunteer efforts serve low-income families, refugees, veterans, seniors, and communities in food deserts.

Our Impact

Since 2010, Carol and Mark have facilitated food distribution from grocery store partners, helping reduce food waste and combatting hunger across the DMV. Today, Harvest Gleaners collaborates with local churches, food banks, veterans' centers, domestic abuse shelters, youth centers, and other community organizations. Together, we provide nutritious food, flowers, and hope to individuals and families in need.

Serving the DMV

The DMV area, encompassing Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, is home to diverse communities and neighborhoods. Harvest Gleaners is committed to addressing food insecurity in these areas by partnering with like-minded organizations and leveraging a network of volunteers to make a meaningful difference.
